300 MHz NMR The 300 MHz Varian Gemini NMR spectrometer is located on the fifth floor of Kent Hale Smith. It is the department's workhorse instrument, dedicated to running 1H and 13C NMR experiments. Further capabilities include: variable temperature, quantitative carbon, DEPT, and a variety of 2-D experiments. |

600 MHz NMR The 600 MHz Varian Inova NMR spectrometer is located in a room especially built to accommodate its high magnetic field. The Unix operating system is loaded with both the new VnmrJ software and Vnmr 6.1c. It is capable of scanning a variety of nuclei including 1H, 13C, 15N, 19F, and 31P. It also has the capability to scan the solid and solution states. Some of the experiments that are run include variable temperature, quantitative carbon, DEPT, NOSEY, COSY, and diffusion. |

DSC Located on the fifth floor, the Rowan Group differential scanning calorimeter is a computer-controlled Pyris 1 power compensated model with an overall temperature range of -170 °C to 730 °C. The instrument currently operates under a nitrogen atmosphere with an intracooler capable of reaching -30 °C. Capable of detecting small thermal transitions in samples (down to 200 nW), this instrument is ideal for probing polymeric melting and glass transition points as well as endotherms and exotherms typical in supramolecular systems such as gelation temperature. |

HPLC The HPLC is a Varian ProStar instrument located in one of the Rowan group labs. It is currently equipped with an analytical reverse-phase C18 silica column for monitoring of reactions and identification of products but can also accomodate preparatory columns for purification if necessary. |

MALDI-TOF MS Located on the first floor, the Bruker Biflex III MALDI-TOF MS (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization – Time Of Flight) is a soft ionization mass spectrometer ideal for analyzing large molecules including synthetic and natural polymers and proteins. Equipped with a standard linear detector and a gridless reflectron detector, the instrument is capable of mass resolution in excess of 10,000 at 3.0 kDa with pulsed ion extraction. With a maximum mass detection of 150 kDa and protein sequencing through post source decay, the instrument is heavily used by several departments on campus. |

UV-Vis The Perkin-Elmer Lambda 800 is a versatile spectrometer operating in the ultraviolet (UV), and visible (Vis) spectral ranges. The spectrometer features a double-beam, double monochromator, ratio recording optical system. In addition the Lambda 800 is equipped with a Peltier Temperature Programmer (PTP-1) which permits spectrophotometric measurements in the range between 0 and 100 °C. Measurements can be made at constant temperatures or a termpartures variable with time by prefixed programs. |
